Granted the storyline isn’t that huge, but in a game like this, one really isn’t needed. The settlers of the newly colonized planet have evolved into a new civilization of their own, and have begun attempts to colonize other planets, and finding out they are not alone in the universe. Starships takes place after the events of Beyond Earth. Thankfully it looks like the Beyond Earth universe is expanding in its own way, because with Starships, it is time to leave the new home planet and expand and conquer its neighboring star systems.

It didn’t wow me in the end, but it was still a fun game which continued the tradition of the “one more turn” gameplay we all know and love. In our review of Beyond Earth, which scored 7.9, we said “Some of its new ideas work better than others, but Civilization: Beyond Earth retains its addictive 4X qualities.Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth played like a total conversion of Civ V, and I was ok with that. Plus, if you already own Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth you’ll be able cross-connect the two games, although details of how they interact haven’t been revealed as of yet. Furthermore, every new playthrough features its own unique strategy map of 'dynamically' generated combat missions. Players will also be able to research futuristic tech, and engage in turn-based tactical space battles complete with customizable spacecrafts.

Starships challenges players to create a federation through exploration, which will expand the federation’s influence, and in turn lead to further dominance throughout the galaxy. “When designing Starships, I was intrigued by the idea of exploring the next chapter in the story of Civilization: Beyond Earth,” says Sid Meier.

It’s said that players command a fleet of starships before setting out to explore the galaxy, defend planets and their civilizations, while building a federation to usher in peace. Due for release in early 2015 as a digital download for Windows-based PC, Mac and iPad, Starships is a turn-based adventure-driven strategy game set in the same universe as Civilization: Beyond Earth.
